Houston Rockets center Alperen Sengun issued an apology this week after making a derogatory comment directed at a female referee during a recent game. Sengun reportedly used a sexist slur on the court, referring to the official using inappropriate language.

Following the incident, Sengun expressed regret and acknowledged his mistake. He stated that he apologized to the official after the game and reiterated his remorse in a public statement. While the details of the exchange were not released by the league, Sengun confirmed that his words were uncalled for and emphasized that they do not reflect his values or respect for officials.

“I let my emotions get the best of me in the heat of the game, and I said something wrong,” Sengun said. “I’ve since apologized to the referee, and I understand the importance of showing respect in all situations — especially toward the officials who do a difficult job.”

The NBA has not publicly announced any disciplinary action related to the incident, but the league has a long-standing policy of addressing disrespectful conduct toward game officials. League representatives have noted in the past that maintaining professionalism and respectful behavior is a top priority for all players and staff.

Sengun, currently in his third NBA season, has been a key contributor for the Rockets. Known for his strong presence in the paint and developing offensive skills, the center has also fielded growing leadership responsibilities on and off the court. This incident marks a reminder of the standards expected of all players, particularly those in visible roles on their teams.

The Houston Rockets organization has not publicly commented on the matter. However, it is expected that internal conversations addressed the need for accountability and professionalism from players representing the franchise.

As the league continues its focus on equitable treatment and respect across all roles in the game, Sengun’s apology serves as a cautionary moment and a public commitment to better conduct in future competitions.
