The Salt Lake Stallions are coming off a win last week but it was just their second of the season. Now they head out on the road to face a streaking San Antonio Commanders side that looks like it could challenge for a championship. In a matchup of the best versus the worst in the Western Conference, can Salt Lake surprise?

Salt Lake Stallions at San Antonio Commanders

Date: Saturday March 23rd, 2019 – 8:05 PM ET

Location: Alamodome – San Antonio, Texas

Salt Lake Stallions

The Stallions smothered the Memphis Express 22-9 last week to move to 2-4. This was a must-win for Salt Lake as the playoffs are just a few weeks away. If they hope to qualify, they have to stay on this track.

The Stallions defense has shown at times that it is very capable of playing at a high level, giving up 15 points or fewer in three of its six games this season. It gave up only 20 in a fourth game. If anything is to blame for this team’s 2-4 record, it’s not the defense. The issue is the offense, which has mustered just 112 points so far this season. They scored a modest 22 points last week but they’ve still scored the fewest in the Western Conference.

The issue for Salt Lake here is that they haven’t won a single road game this season. Can they turn things around against a red-hot San Antonio side?

San Antonio Commanders

The Commanders whacked the Atlanta Legends, 37-6 to move to 3-1 on the road this season. San Antonio gets to play three of its remaining four regular-season games at home, which only increases the odds that the Western Division championship game will be played in the Alamodome. San Antonio’s defense has allowed only six points in separate games this season, plus 11 points in a third game. Along with the running game of Kenneth Farrow – who is second in the AAF in rushing – and the efficient play of quarterback Logan Woodside, San Antonio knows its identity and sticks to the gameplan very well. As long as they don’t play sloppy this week, they’ll win.

Trends

The Salt Lake Stallions are 2-4 straight up. They defeated the Memphis Express, 22-9, in Week 6. The Stallions played a bunch of unders but then went over the total in Week 5 against San Diego. Week 6 marked a return to the under column. It is important to note that the Stallions have not yet won a road game this season as they lost at Arizona, at Birmingham, and at San Diego. They are 2-1 straight up at home, but they need to win some road games if they want to remain a factor in the AAF’s Western Division.

The San Antonio Commanders are 4-2 straight up and leading the Western Division. Their over-under pattern is that they don’t have one. San Antonio is one of the tougher teams to evaluate in terms of totals as their point totals have gone 21, 66, 42, 23, 54, 43. San Antonio has lost only one relatively close game – 37-29 to Orlando in Week 2 – and has played only two home games so far this season (with four road games). The Commanders are 1-1 straight up and ATS at home.
