A Dominican Republic appeals court is expected to decide in December whether to uphold or overturn Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco’s conviction and sentencing in a sexual abuse case. Franco’s legal team appeared in court on Tuesday to request a reversal of the judgment, though specific details of their arguments and the basis of the appeal were not disclosed.

Franco, who has been suspended from Major League Baseball pending the outcome of the legal proceedings, was previously convicted in the Dominican Republic on charges connected to allegations of an inappropriate relationship. The case has drawn significant attention both in the Dominican Republic and the United States, given Franco’s status as a rising player in MLB and his previously signed long-term contract with the Rays.

MLB has maintained a stance of cooperation with Dominican authorities throughout the investigation and has placed Franco on administrative leave in accordance with its joint domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse policy. The league has not issued a formal disciplinary ruling, indicating that its actions will depend on the final outcome of the legal process.

Franco’s suspension has had an impact on Tampa Bay’s roster and long-term plans. Prior to the legal proceedings, he was seen as a cornerstone of the franchise, having signed an 11-year extension in 2021 worth at least $182 million. His absence has prompted the team to adjust its infield structure and prospect development strategy going forward.

This case is being closely watched within and beyond the baseball community for its legal implications and potential consequences for Franco’s future in the sport. The December appeals court decision will be a pivotal moment, determining whether the original conviction stands or if the case will be reconsidered in a lower court or possibly dismissed.

Further updates are expected from legal representatives and officials as the appeals process continues. Until a final decision is reached, Franco remains under suspension and unavailable for team activities.
