Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry said Tuesday that the team’s starting quarterback job remains open, with both Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson among the options under consideration. Berry emphasized that the Browns do not feel rushed to name a starter and will instead allow the competition to unfold over time.

Berry indicated that the organization plans to use the coming weeks and months to evaluate the quarterbacks on the roster, including Sanders and Watson, before settling on a depth chart. He noted that the decision does not need to be finalized immediately and that the coaching staff will weigh performance in offseason work, meeting room preparation, and on-field command before determining who will lead the offense.

By keeping the competition open, the Browns appear intent on fostering an environment in which multiple quarterbacks have the opportunity to earn the role. Sanders, a younger option, and Watson, an established veteran, present different profiles and potential paths for the team’s offense. Berry’s comments suggest that the organization will be deliberate rather than reactive as it assesses which direction to take.

Berry did not outline a firm timetable for announcing a starter, instead pointing to the natural rhythm of the offseason program. As the Browns progress through offseason workouts, training camp, and preseason action, the front office and coaching staff are expected to monitor how each quarterback adapts to the system, works with teammates, and handles situational football.

The Browns’ approach underscores a broader focus on competition across the roster. Berry’s remarks highlight that the team values flexibility and wants to see how the quarterback group develops before locking in a final decision. While Sanders and Watson are both firmly in the mix, the team is prioritizing a thorough evaluation process over an early declaration.

For now, Cleveland enters the next phase of the offseason with its most important offensive position unresolved, but with a clear plan to let performance and preparation drive the eventual choice of a starting quarterback.
