South Africa defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi chose to sign for Chicago Fire FC because the club made him feel welcome and at ease from the outset, according to his agent, Basia Michaels.

Speaking to ESPN, Michaels explained that the centre-back’s decision was driven primarily by the personal connection he felt with the Major League Soccer side. While many transfers at this level can involve a range of competing factors, including potential roles, long-term plans, and interest from other clubs, Michaels said that for Mbokazi the decisive element was the sense of belonging he experienced in his interactions with Chicago Fire.

Although specific contract details and the full list of interested teams were not disclosed, Michaels indicated that the atmosphere around the club, the communication from its representatives, and the way Mbokazi was treated during discussions all contributed to his choice. The defender, she said, responded strongly to the way Chicago Fire staff presented their vision for him and for the team’s future, and to how they made an effort to understand him as both a player and a person.

Michaels emphasized that Mbokazi was looking for an environment where he could settle quickly, adapt to a new league, and continue to grow in his career. She characterized Chicago as a place where he felt he could integrate into the squad and the community, with the club working to ensure he felt comfortable about making a significant move away from South Africa.

The transfer adds a South African presence to Chicago Fire’s defensive options, with the club bringing in a centre-back whose profile and potential have attracted attention. While exact timelines and additional conditions around the move were not made public, the agent’s comments underline that the human side of the recruitment process can be as important as any technical or tactical considerations.

For Mbokazi, according to Michaels, the key factor was simple: in his view, Chicago Fire made him feel at home, and that feeling guided his decision to commit his future to the club.
