Royals, Veteran Catcher Elias Díaz Reach Minor League Agreement

The Kansas City Royals have reached an agreement on a minor league contract with veteran catcher Elias Díaz. The club announced Friday that the 11-year MLB veteran is expected to report to major league camp next week, giving the organization additional depth and experience behind the plate as preparations continue for the upcoming season.

Díaz, 34, has spent more than a decade in the majors, serving primarily as a catcher and bringing extensive knowledge of game-calling, pitcher management, and defensive responsibilities at one of the sport’s most demanding positions. By signing him to a minor league deal and inviting him to big league camp, the Royals create an opportunity to evaluate how he fits within their current catching mix during spring training.

The move reflects a common roster-building strategy across MLB, in which teams add experienced players on minor league contracts heading into camp. Such agreements provide flexibility for the club while giving the player a chance to compete for a roster spot or establish himself as a reliable option at Triple-A with potential for an in-season call-up. For Kansas City, adding a veteran catcher offers another option should injuries or performance issues arise among their primary catching group.

Díaz’s presence in big league camp is also likely to benefit the Royals’ pitching staff and younger catchers. Veteran catchers are often valued for their ability to work with a wide range of pitchers, help refine game plans, and contribute to the development of less experienced players through their understanding of opposing hitters and in-game adjustments.

Specific financial details of the agreement and any potential opt-outs or performance-related clauses were not disclosed. The team also did not outline the exact role Díaz is expected to play once camp begins, beyond confirming that he will report to major league workouts next week. His performance during spring training will help determine whether he can claim a spot on the Opening Day roster or provide organizational depth to start the year.

For now, the signing gives Kansas City another experienced option at a key position as the club continues shaping its roster ahead of the regular season.
