The St. Louis Cardinals have signed infielder Ramón Urías to a one-year contract that includes a mutual option for the 2027 season, the club announced Saturday. Terms of the agreement, including salary figures, were not disclosed.

By bringing in Urías, the Cardinals add a versatile defender capable of handling multiple infield positions. He has experience at second base, third base and shortstop, giving the team additional flexibility as it shapes its roster for the coming season. The mutual option for 2027 provides both the player and the organization with the possibility of extending the partnership beyond the upcoming year if both sides are satisfied with the fit.

Urías’ defensive versatility is expected to be one of his primary assets in St. Louis. The Cardinals have traditionally emphasized strong infield defense, and adding a player who can move around the diamond offers the coaching staff more options when setting lineups or responding to injuries over the course of a long season. His presence also deepens the bench and can help cover off-days for regular starters across the infield.

The agreement also reflects the club’s continued effort to build depth and competition for playing time. A player with the ability to step into different roles can be particularly valuable over 162 games, as teams routinely manage workloads and navigate stretches with condensed schedules or travel. Urías can be used as a starter when needed or as a late-inning replacement, depending on how the roster evolves through spring training and into the regular season.

For Urías, the move to St. Louis represents an opportunity to carve out a role on a club that has longstanding expectations of competing in its division. The one-year structure of the contract, paired with the mutual option, sets up a season in which both the player and team can evaluate how well the fit works on and off the field before making a longer-term commitment.

With the signing now official, Urías is expected to report to camp and begin working with his new teammates and coaching staff as the Cardinals continue preparations for the upcoming MLB season.
