Womens Boxing 2017

This week we discuss the state of Women’s Boxing in 2017. Welcome to the Talk N Shoot Boxing Podcast Episode #34. The first major women’s boxing match of 2017 goes down this coming Saturday, January 14th as Brooklyn’s own Amanda Serrano faces Mexico’s Yazmin Rivas with her WBO super bantamweight women’s world title on the line. The fight is one of the feature bouts on a major boxing card promoted by Floyd Mayweather Jr and Lou DiBella at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center this Saturday, January 14th.

2016 was a standout year for Serrano (30-1-1), who went 4-0 and captured world titles in two different weight classes. For this fight, she faces the experienced Rivas (35-9-1), who has held world titles in two different weight classes herself. The card features two men’s world title fights as super middleweights James DeGale and Badou Jack clash in what is being labelled a title unification bout and super featherweight world champion Jose Pedraza defends his title against the challenge of 22 year old Gervonta Davis. The two men’s bouts are sure to appear on the Showtime broadcast (check you local listings for start times), but it is not clear whether Serrano vs Rivas will be aired.

Such is the state of women’s boxing that a major fight on the calendar may not get the attention it deserves.

Womens Boxing 2017 – TnS Boxing Podcast #34

In this 34th edition of the TalknShoot Podcast, our host Miguel Iturrate delves into the world of women’s boxing and the state of the sport as we enter another calendar year.

At the start of 2016, the women of boxing entered the calendar year with a lot of hope, as the sport had taken hold all over the world. South and Central America, Europe and Asia all have extensive women’s boxing scenes and a lot of talented fighters were plying their craft on a regional level. The idea was that 2016 was “The Year” that would see the female side of the sport hit the mainstream.

January 27-31st of 2016 saw the World Boxing Council host their 2nd annual convention for women’s boxing in Mexico, and the event featured a great deal of talk that was expected to lead to a renewed push to bring the sport to the forefront. There was talk of international fights on a high level, and most interestingly, there was talk of establishing a minimum payment for world title fights among the women.

Unfortunately, the expected landmark year did not happen. There were a few stand out moments for the women throughout the year, such as “The First Lady of Boxing” Cecilia Braekhus bringing boxing back to her native Norway after the sport had been absent for more than 30 years. Kali Reis, one of the few bright spots on the American scene went to New Zealand and came home with the WBC’s world title at middleweight, and then Reis, no stranger to fighting on the road went to Germany to face undefeated Christina Hammer in a title unification bout. Amanda Serrano split time between fighting in the United States, but unable to stay busy enough, also took two fights in her native Puerto Rico. All-world lightweight champion Delfine Persoon of Belgium continued her reign as one of the top pound for pound fighters in the world but she did not get any offers from overseas.

Check out more details on the state of women’s boxing in this TnS Podcast.
