Heavyweight Boxing Odds – The DC Armory in Washington D.C. features an eleven fight boxing card promoted by Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy where the main events are set to air on HBO in the United States.
The main event features undefeated 24-0 prospect Luis Ortiz of Cuba as he takes on the challenge of the 44 year old veteran Tony Thompson, who brings a record of 40-6 to the fight.

On paper Tony Thompson is dangerous. he has had an extended career these past few years, as he was able to pull off upset wins over a pair ofup and coming fighters that took him lightly. England’s David Price, an Olympic Bronze medalist, was brutally KO’d by Thompson when he was brought in as a stepping stone for Price. Foolishly, Price thought the first fight a fluke and he got a re-match. The results were the same, as Price was KO’d by Thompson a second time.
The there was the case of Odlanier Solis, who was a big heavyweight and like Ortiz, he came from Cuba with a big amateur background. Thompson caught a lazy, sloppy Solis in Turkey, winnig a split decision over 12 rounds. Solis, like Price, asked for and got a re-match. The second match saw Solis retire on his stool as he was outboxed by the cagey Thompson a second time.
But Ortiz is a different breed. Price turned out to be slow and uncoordinated as a professional, and Thompson twice caught him and put him out in the first half of the fight. Solis, for all his pedigree, size and natural talent, has proven to have a questionable work ethic. Ortiz is none of those things, as he retains the “hunger” factor and he is a powerful, mobile heavyweight who fights fearlessly and aggressively.
That is a bad match-up for Thompson. Thompson likes to counter-punch and because he is slow, he does take shots. Thompson is a tough, iron-chin type, but getting hit flush by Ortiz is going to have it’s effect on Thompson. One way or another, a clean shot by Ortiz will either knowck him out or at least make him re-think his defenses. Thompson is not known for a lot of activity, and if he tightens up further and throws less punches Ortiz could turn up the heat.
Ortiz should be given credit for taking the fight as there is little upside to a win over Thompson. Ortiz not only needs to win, he needs to do so in a way that is definitive and does not allow Thompson to make him look bad.

Two other world titles are on the line as undefeated 22-0 Welterweight Sadam Ali faces once-beaten 26-1 Jessie Vargas for the vacant WBO Welterweight title and interim WBC World Featherweight champion Robinson Castellanos (23-11) faces the challenge of Oscar Escandon (24-2).
