Triple G Preview and More - TnS Boxing Podcast #39

Triple G Preview and More – TnS Boxing Podcast #39 – This coming Saturday, March 18th sees boxing return to Madison Square Garden as HBO pay-per-view presents Gennady Golovkin versus Daniel Jacobs.

Golovkin is 36-0 and he currently holds a bevy of world titles at 160 pounds. One title that has escaped him is the WBA’s  World title currently in the hands of Jacobs, who brings a strong 32-1 career record to the table along with the belt. Golovkin is known for his knock outs, having scored 33 stoppages in his 36 fights but his KO percentage is closely mirrored by Jacobs, who has 29 stoppages in his 33 career fights. Toss in the fact that Jacobs is a little bit taller, a little bit longer and a little bit younger and you have to ask yourself “so we have a live underdog here?”

The line sees Golovkin entering a major favorite at -900, with Jacobs coming back at +600. Jacobs captured the vacant version of the WBA world title back in August of 2014 and he has held the belt through 4 successful title defenses. Golovkin holds the WBA’s “Super World” title above Jacobs and he also carries the WBC and IBF world titles into the match. To trace Golovkin’s time as champion you have to go all the way back to August of 2010 when he won the interim WBA title and he has added world title belts ever since. Jacobs will mark the eighteenth title defense for Triple G.

Jacobs may not be well known just yet, but his personal story includes overcoming cancer and as such the 30 year old should serve as an inspiration to people all over the world. Combine that most difficult of fights with his incredible December of 2015 first round whitewashing of top contender Peter Quillin and you get the feeling that Jacobs is not one to back down from a hard fight.

The Garden will host seven fights in all, with the WBC Word super flyweight title bout between Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (46-0) and Wisaksil Wangsek (41-4-1) in the co-feature spot. HBO has been packaging the undefeated duo of Golovkin and Gonzalez for several years now on the same events.

The boxing calendar heads into the busy part of the year as April and May both are traditionally months in which big fights are held.

One fighter who we apparently will not be seeing in this time frame is Manny Pacquiao. We last saw Pacquiao in November of last year when he defeated Jessie Vargas on pay-per-view in a performance generally reviewed as strong. Since then however his promoter Bob arum has signaled a desire to take Pacquiao on a “world tour” as the Filipino superstar closes out his career and the April time frame was discussed as a return date. Pacquiao was linked to a fight in Australia with Jeff Horn but that did not materialize and most recently he was said to be fighting Amir Khan in the United Arab Emirates. Neither of those fights is currently happening and Pacquiao is now said to be looking at a return in July.
