In this latest edition of Talk ‘n’ Shoot’s Boxing Podcast, we focus on this coming Saturday’s Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs Amir Khan HBO pay-per-view fight.
The bookies have “Canelo” a roughly 5 to 1 favorite as we head into fight week. The bottom line is that now that fight week is upon us, we are getting to get hit with the full brunt of HBO, Amir Khan and Golden Boy Promotions media machine and this is going to have all the trimmings of a mega-fight. But back when the bout was announced, the promotions tried to pass it off as a “mega” fight and event but the bout was not received well.
The facts are simple. Amir Khan has never won a title at welterweight and he has never even fought at super welterweight. How this qualifies him for a shot at the WBC’s World title at middleweight is unclear. Khan is well known and in fact he is ridiculed for his pursuit of a big payday fight against Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jr. It has derailed Khan’s career and led to periods of inactivity, but Khan has long thought of himself as a massive draw in his own right and he has sought only major fights for some time. Pacquiao and Floyd never bit.
Now Golden Boy will offer Khan as a viable opponent for “Canelo” Alvarez, the so called biggest draw in boxing. Alvarez may be the biggest draw in boxing right now, but someone needs to look promoter Oscar De La Hoya and his red headed boy in the eye and say “your no Floyd Mayweather Jr”.
Khan has a lot of upside here if he wins, and he has harped on that in his never ending monologue about himself. But what is more likely is a fight where the differences between the two men establish themselves and lead to a “Canelo” victory. Alvarez can only benefit by finishing the fight in a memorable way.

The Canelo vs Khan Edition
The second half of the podcast gets us back to the Heavyweight division, as we look at this weekend’s Kubrat Pulev vs Dereck Chisora bout scheduled for Hamburg, Germany. Staying with the big boys, we touch upon the subject of new IBF heavyweight world titleholder Anthony Joshua and his recently announced future opponent Dominic Breazeale of the United States. The shallow promoters are going to pit this as a battle of “Olympians” but the truth is it is a showdown of two rudimentary heavyweights who are really at the beginning of their careers and should be no where near the title picture yet. But that is Heavyweight boxing in 2016!
