Boxing PPV Calendar 2016 – Here on the 17th edition of the Talk ‘n’ Shoot Boxing Podcast we start off a discussion on the boxing pay-per-view scene for 2016.
The recent HBO pay-per-view bout between Terence Crawford and Viktor Postol is said to have achieved a woeful number of PPV buys, somewhere between 50,000 to 75,000 buys. Later this year, HBO will roll out both the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs Liam Smith bout and the Andre Ward vs Sergey Kovalev bout, and they will expect people to pay a premium on PPV to see them.

Increasingly, it looks like when Floyd Mayweather Jr. retired, he took the whole PPV medium with him. “Money” and Manny Pacquiao cashed in on their fame with the biggest PPV of all time, but the weak fight left most people with a bad taste in their mouths in general. PPV #s since have been abysmal. Even Mayweather himself came back after Pacquaio to poke the PPV medium with a stick and check if it was dead, and sure enough, against Andre Berto, Mayweather found out that it was. Mayweather did his lowest PPV sales in a decade and once again, no one delivered a performance that would make people want to see more.
Ward and Kovalev especially may be a formula for a disappointing PPV buy, as both men are making their debuts as headliners in this format. Neither man did themselves any big favors with their “warm up” bouts on “free” HBO as Kovalev vs Chilemba and Ward vs Brand both went the distance with few memorable moments produced.
Also heading for a late year PPV date is Saul “Canelo” Alvarez as he is facing England’s Liam Smith on HBO PPV. Alvarez did about 600k PPV buys in his last outing against Amir Khan, and he will be hard pressed to match that with Smith. Smith is the WBO world titleholder at 154 lbs but this is his first fight outside of the UK and it is arguable that he has not had top-level exposure there.

Boxing PPV Calendar 2016
The TnS podcast #17 kicks off taking about the heavyweight division. Tyson and Hughie Fury were both named in a potential PED scandal, but the pair have come out swinging. More importantly, no one has cancelled the Wladimir Klitschko rematch for Tyson, so this too will blow over.
Not doing so well is former IBF world champion Charles Martin, who was shot through the forearm in Los Angeles in an incident that went down at 5AM. We also look at the recent chaos surrounding the Tyson and Hughie Fury dopng allegations, and we look at Golden Boy Heavyweight Luis Ortiz and his recently pulling out of the support bout of Canelo vs Smith, where he was to face Alexander Usitnov.
We also recap Carl Frampton’s strong victory over Leo Santa Cruz this past week. We look at the potential for Manny Pacquiao vs Jessie Vargas, as that potential November match-up has been talked about extensively this week.
