Derek Sprague has announced his resignation as CEO of the PGA of America, concluding a one-year tenure in the role. The decision comes as Sprague returns to his home in upstate New York to provide care and support for his mother and mother-in-law, both of whom have experienced declining health and now require increased assistance.
Sprague assumed the CEO position with the PGA of America following a long-standing association with the organization, having previously served in various leadership capacities including a term as PGA of America President from 2014 to 2016. His appointment as CEO marked a continuation of the association’s commitment to executives with deep institutional knowledge and a strong track record of service to the game of golf.
In his one year as CEO, Sprague played a key role in advancing several PGA initiatives aimed at growing the game, supporting club professionals, and enhancing championship events. His leadership spanned organizational operations, the promotion of golf education and inclusion, and preparations for upcoming major tournaments under PGA of America oversight.
Under his guidance, the organization also supported ongoing development and programming at PGA Frisco, the state-of-the-art headquarters and golf complex opened in Texas. The facility has become a focal point for both member services and major championships.
Sprague’s departure was confirmed in early January 2026, and the PGA of America has expressed support for his decision to prioritize family. “Derek has been a valued leader within our organization for many years, and we support his choice to step away during this important time for his loved ones,” said a spokesperson for the PGA of America.
An interim CEO has not yet been named, and the organization’s board is expected to begin a search process for Sprague’s successor. In the meantime, senior leadership will oversee day-to-day operations to ensure continuity across the PGA’s programs and initiatives.
Sprague’s departure marks a significant transition for the PGA of America, which continues to navigate both challenges and opportunities in the evolving landscape of professional and recreational golf.
