Wide receiver Adam Thielen has announced his retirement from the NFL, bringing an end to a 12-season career. The two-time Pro Bowl selection made the announcement in a statement posted on social media on Wednesday, thanking fans, teammates, coaches, and his family for their support throughout his professional journey.
Thielen, who entered the league in 2013 as an undrafted free agent out of Minnesota State University, made an immediate impression with the Minnesota Vikings. Despite initially signing only a rookie tryout contract, he eventually carved out a starting role thanks to his strong route-running, reliable hands, and work ethic. Over ten seasons with the Vikings, Thielen emerged as one of the team’s most consistent and productive receivers.
He recorded over 1,000 receiving yards in three separate seasons and was named to the Pro Bowl in 2017 and 2018. In 2018, he tallied a career-high 113 receptions for 1,373 yards and nine touchdowns. Thielen became known for his route precision and chemistry with multiple quarterbacks in Minnesota, including Case Keenum and Kirk Cousins. He ranks high on the Vikings’ all-time receiving lists, finishing his time in Minnesota with 534 catches for 6,682 yards and 55 touchdowns.
After his release from the Vikings following the 2022 season, Thielen signed with the Carolina Panthers. He played two seasons in Carolina, continuing to serve as a reliable target and veteran presence in the locker room. His leadership was often praised by teammates and coaches alike.
Off the field, Thielen was active in the community through the Thielen Foundation, which he co-founded with his wife, Caitlin. The foundation focuses on youth development and promoting healthy lifestyles for kids.
Thielen retires as one of the most productive undrafted players in NFL history and remains a respected figure across the league. His story of perseverance and achievement is widely regarded as an inspiration to aspiring athletes.
