Barry Trotz is planning to step down from his role as general manager of the Nashville Predators, according to sources familiar with the situation. Trotz, who took over as GM in 2023 following longtime executive David Poile’s retirement, will remain with the organization until a new general manager is appointed.

During his tenure as GM, Trotz continued to shape the roster through trades, draft picks, and strategic decisions aimed at retooling the franchise. His leadership marked a period of transition for the team, which had seen significant changes in personnel and direction since his arrival. Trotz brought a deep familiarity with the organization, having previously served as the franchise’s first head coach from 1998 until 2014.

In that earlier role, Trotz helped lay the foundation for the club, guiding the team through its expansion years and into playoff contention. His return as general manager was seen as a full-circle moment, tying together his extensive history with the Predators.

Though the team has experienced mixed results in recent seasons, Trotz was credited with reinvigorating aspects of the franchise’s development system and emphasizing a competitive culture. While the Predators did not make a deep playoff run during his time as GM, they remained in the hunt in a competitive Central Division.

The timing of his decision to retire aligns with the organization’s ongoing efforts to evaluate its long-term goals. By stepping aside now, Trotz offers the franchise an opportunity to initiate a thorough search for its next front-office leader.

There has been no official public statement from Trotz or the Predators organization regarding his retirement announcement at this time. It remains unclear who is being considered as his successor, but with Trotz staying on during the transition, the team is expected to maintain stability throughout the process. The search for a new general manager is already underway, with more details likely to emerge in the coming weeks.
