Scottie Scheffler opened his campaign at the Phoenix Open with a challenging first round, carding a 2-over-par 73 on Thursday. The round places the two-time defending champion in a difficult position as he attempts to become the first player to win three straight titles at this event.

Scheffler, currently ranked among the PGA Tour’s top performers, came into the tournament with high expectations following a strong start to the season. However, his first round at TPC Scottsdale Gateway Golf Course did not go as planned. Despite favorable conditions and several birdie opportunities, Scheffler struggled to find consistency with his approach shots and putter, leading to a round that included multiple bogeys and limited scoring chances.

The Phoenix Open, known for its enthusiastic crowds and stadium-style 16th hole, has been a successful venue for Scheffler in the past. He claimed victory in each of the past two years, showcasing both his resilience under pressure and his ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Thursday’s performance, however, leaves him near the projected cut line and in need of significant improvement in Friday’s second round to remain in contention.

Scheffler’s difficulties on Thursday included missed greens in regulation and an inability to convert short putts. While he managed a few highlights, including a birdie on the back nine, the overall performance fell short of his typical standard. Other players in the field capitalized on the calm morning weather, posting under-par scores and widening the gap that Scheffler must now attempt to close.

With one round remaining before the cut is determined, Scheffler faces a crucial test of form and mental focus. A strong showing on Friday will be essential if he hopes to make the weekend and keep his title defense alive.

The Phoenix Open continues with second-round play on Friday, and all eyes will be on Scheffler to see whether he can turn his performance around and extend his stay in the tournament.
