Chris Gotterup opened the 2026 Phoenix Open with a strong performance on Thursday, firing a bogey-free 8-under-par 63 to take a two-shot lead after the first round. His round was highlighted by solid ball-striking and consistent putting, allowing him to make the most of scoring opportunities at TPC Scottsdale.

Gotterup’s 63 puts him ahead of a crowded field, with several players still in close pursuit as the tournament unfolds in Scottsdale, Arizona. Taking advantage of ideal weather and receptive greens, Gotterup found success off the tee and with his approach shots, navigating the Stadium Course without dropping a shot.

The 25-year-old started his round on the back nine and quickly found rhythm, carding four birdies before the turn. He continued that momentum on the front nine with four more birdies to complete a flawless round. The strong start places him in a favorable position going into Friday’s second round.

Several other competitors also posted strong opening rounds, though none matched Gotterup’s low score. With traditionally low scoring conditions at the Phoenix Open, the leaderboard remains tightly packed behind him, setting up for competitive play heading into the weekend.

The Phoenix Open, known for its energetic atmosphere and the iconic par-3 16th hole, drew its usual enthusiastic crowd as Gotterup made his way around the course. Despite the pressure and spectacle that often define the event, the University of Oklahoma alumnus remained composed throughout the round.

Gotterup is seeking his first PGA Tour victory. His performance in the opening round marks one of the strongest starts in his career,. With three rounds remaining, consistency will be key if he is to maintain his lead in the days ahead.

The tournament continues Friday with the second round, where conditions are expected to remain favorable for scoring.
