Inter Miami’s bid to begin its MLS Cup title defense on a positive note faltered on Saturday, as the club fell 3-0 to LAFC at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in the league’s season opener.

The match, staged at the historic Coliseum rather than LAFC’s usual home ground, saw the hosts control long stretches of play and capitalize on key moments at both ends of the field. Inter Miami struggled to establish rhythm in possession and found it difficult to break through LAFC’s organized defensive structure over the course of 90 minutes.

LAFC opened the scoring in the first half, taking advantage of sustained pressure that pinned Miami deep in its own territory. The breakthrough reflected the early balance of play, with the home side sharper in transition and more decisive in the attacking third. Miami, meanwhile, created only limited clear chances before the interval, often forced into hurried clearances or speculative efforts from distance.

After halftime, Inter Miami attempted to push higher up the field in search of an equalizer, but that tactical shift left additional space for LAFC to exploit. The hosts doubled their lead midway through the second half, punishing a turnover and quickly converting the opportunity. The third goal arrived later in the match, effectively sealing the result and underlining LAFC’s efficiency on the day.

While the scoreline highlighted LAFC’s attacking edge, the performance was also marked by disciplined defending. The home side restricted Inter Miami’s ability to combine through central areas and limited service into dangerous zones in and around the penalty area. When Miami did find openings, LAFC’s back line and goalkeeper responded with key interventions to preserve the clean sheet.

For Inter Miami, the defeat marks a challenging start to the regular season following last year’s championship run. The team now faces the task of regrouping quickly, addressing the gaps exposed in Los Angeles, and building cohesion as the schedule moves forward. LAFC, meanwhile, emerges from the opener with an emphatic win, an early marker of intent in what is expected to be another competitive MLS campaign.

Both clubs will now turn their attention to upcoming fixtures, with Inter Miami looking to reset and collect its first points of the season, and LAFC aiming to build on the confidence and momentum generated by a comprehensive performance in front of a large Coliseum crowd.
