Kentucky Derby Odds: It is less than three months until the 2015 Kentucky Derby and odds are already out on who will win the first race in the Triple Crown. Trainer Bob Baffert has the two early favorites in Dortmund and American Pharoah. Those two horses are listed with odds of 10-1 and 12-1 respectively. Let’s take a look at the other top contenders to win the 2015 Kentucky Derby.

Kentucky Derby Futures

The latest Kentucky Derby Future wager pool from Churchill Downs has Dortmund and American Pharoah as the favorites. Dortmund is listed at 10-1 while American Pharoah is 12-1. Two other horses have gotten some action recently as Upstart is also listed at 12-1 while Texas Red is listed at 15-1. If you think any of those four horses will win the Kentucky Derby then now is the time to bet on them because they are not likely to be listed at double-digit odds in May. The drawback of betting the horses now is that if they don’t run in the Derby you don’t get your money back. It is definitely a high risk/high reward scenario.

Other horses in the latest Derby Future pool are Carpe Diem for trainer Todd Pletcher who is listed at 15-1, El Kabeir at 20-1, Ocho Ocho Ocho at 20-1, Khozan at 20-1, Lord Nelson at 30-1, Frosted at 30-1, Imperia at 30-1, J S Bach at 30-1, Competitive Edger who is 30-1, Daredevil at 30-1, Firing Line at 30-1, The Great War at 30-1, Far Right at 50-1, Gorgeous Bird at 50-1, International Star at 50-1, Itsaknockout at 50-1, Mr. Z at 50-1, Ocean Knight at 50-1 and Prospect Park at 50-1.

It should also be noted that in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool there is also a wager that includes all of the other 3-year olds in the country and you get that bet at even money.

Dortmund and American Pharoah

While the field is the favorite at this point, the value is definitely on horses like Dortmund and American Pharoah. You can get each of those horses at double-digits. American Pharoah is the Eclipse Award champion and he has been training really well for Bob Baffert. American Pharoah is a two-time Grade I winner. He was heavily favored to win last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile but missed the race due to a foot bruise.

“He looks good, really healthy,” Baffert said. “Once he missed the Breeders’ Cup, we just gave him 60 days off. I think that little break really helped him. He’s still the horse. He’s pretty special. Just a freaky horse. If he stays healthy, he’s going to have a fun spring.”

Baffert’s other top horse, Dortmund, is unbeaten in three starts. He will race on Saturday in the Robert Lewis at Santa Anita.
