2018 Rose Bowl - Ohio State vs. Washington
2018 Rose Bowl - Ohio State vs. Washington

The Granddaddy of Them All The Rose Bowl, doesn’t quite live up to that moniker for 2018, as the CFP semifinals have rotated to the Cotton and Orange bowls, but The Rose Bowl still has a great matchup to end the traditional New Year’s Day festivities in Southern California.  The Ohio State Buckeyes  bring Heisman Trophy finalist Dwayne Haskins and its high-flying offense to the west to face Washington Huskies and its suffocating defense.  The Buckeyes are the favorites  in this game by just shy of a touchdown, with the game total at 57½ points.   Some early action on the under has brought the total down a half point from it’s open at 58.

Dwayne Haskins has almost been better against the better defenses that the Buckeyes have played, such as Michigan, but Washington will be another stern test.  The temptation here is to say both teams have reason to be motivated as Washington wants a chance at national recognition after blowing a winnable season opener against Auburn.  Ohio State on the other hand would like to show the CFP committee they were wrong in excluding the Buckeyes for a second straight year — and to send coach Urban Meyer, who is now retiring for the second time, off with a win.

Picks & Predictions:  Washington Huskies     SU,  Washington Huskies   +6.5  ATS, UNDER 58

The energy around Ohio State seemed to wax and wane this season, and it’s worth wondering what a month off will do a team that had national-title hopes.   As for Washington, give Chris Peterson and his staff a month to prepare for a game, and they might make life especially difficult for  any quarterback, even one as talented as Haskins who just might be the best pro prospect of the three Heisman Trophy finalists.
