All the prep races are finished and we have a good idea of who this year\u2019s top Derby contenders are. This year we go into the 144<sup>th<\/sup> running of the Kentucky Derby without a pre-eminent favorite. The entire field looks strong, but without a doubt, four top horses come to mind, with another five in a group of elite, \u00a0that are exceptionally accomplished. He\u2019s undefeated, and trained by Bob Baffert.\u00a0 He\u2019s also\u00a0 ridden by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/topic\/sports\/horse-racing\/mike-smith-%28jockey%29-PESPT0016880-topic.html\">Mike Smith<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 giving him an unbeatable r\u00e9sum\u00e9. <strong>Justify<\/strong> didn\u2019t run as a 2-year-old, but with a trainer like Bob Baffert behind him, there\u2019s no worries that the horse is lightly raced. Justify commanded the field in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/topic\/sports\/horse-racing\/santa-anita-derby-%28racehorse%29-ANCA000093-topic.html\">Santa Anita Derby<\/a>\u00a0and showed real talent withstanding a challenge from the more experienced Bolt d\u2019Oro.\u00a0 Will have to see how he does against even stiffer competition.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"2018 Kentucky Derby - The Horses to Watch, Predictions and Betting Odds\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kg6R2-hmlQ4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Audible:\u00a0 \u00a08 to 1 odds<\/strong><br \/>\nAudible is a horse trained by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/topic\/sports\/horse-racing\/todd-pletcher-ANCA000097-topic.html\">Todd Pletcher<\/a>\u00a0who won the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/topic\/sports\/horse-racing\/florida-derby-%28racehorse%29-ANCA000076-topic.html\">Florida Derby<\/a>\u00a0and looks set to peak at Churchill Downs. \u00a0If that sounds like a repeat, your correct as that was the story for 2017 Kentucky Derby champion Always Dreaming. \u00a0The horse has been right on this year, and has shown he can win big races by stalking the pace and by coming from behind. At 8 to 1 odds Audible might not be the top pick, but he certainly has the fans, and is following a familiar pattern to win Derby.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mendelssohn:\u00a0 \u00a05 to 1\u00a0odds<br \/>\n<\/strong>Mendelssohn is trained by the Irishman Aidan O\u2019Brien, who is one of the best in the world. International entrants are seldom treated as serious threats at Churchill Downs, but this horse could be the exception and certainly has the talent to win the Derby, maybe even make a run at the Triple Crown.\u00a0 Mendelssohn attracted a lot of focus with the 106 Beyer Speed Figure he earned for his March 31 race which he won (by 18\u00bd lengths) in the UAE Derby.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Magnum Moon:\u00a0 7 to 1\u00a0odds<\/strong><br \/>\nMagnum Moon is another horse that did not run as a 2-year-old, but he\u2019s now won four races this year, including an amazing\u00a0 effort in the March 17\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/topic\/sports\/horse-racing\/rebel-stakes-EVSPR000252-topic.html\">Rebel Stakes<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 He won the Arkansas Derby to stamp his resume for Churchill Downs, and he lead easily at Oaklawn and was never threatened. Magnum Moon is trained by Todd Pletcher, and although his speed figures have been a touch below the best of the three horses above him, and he has not yet \u00a0beaten the top runners like Bolt d\u2019Oro, he definitely is among the elite in the Kentucky Derby field.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bolt d\u2019Oro:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong> <strong>8 to 1\u00a0odds<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>\u00a0This California contender is also at odds of 8 to 1 along with <strong>Audible<\/strong>. He finished third in the Juvenile, then second to McKinzie in the March 10 San Felipe Stakes, where he was pushed to first by a disqualification.\u00a0 He also finished second to Justify at Santa Anita, so it will be interesting to see how Bolt d\u2019Oro runs against Justify in the longer race at Churchill Downs.\u00a0 He is trained by Mick Ruis who said Bolt d\u2019Oro will be better at the Derby\u2019s 1 1\/4 miles distance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Good Magic:\u00a0 \u00a06 to 1\u00a0odds<br \/>\n<\/strong>Good Magic\u2019s odds may\u00a0be a bit low for the \u00a0 2017 Breeders\u2019 Cup Juvenile winner.\u00a0 In \u00a0his first race as a 3-year-old, the March 3 Fountain of Youth Stakes he finished third, but he got a solid win last Saturday in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland, even though the Blue Grass did not have \u00a0the highest level of competition of the prep races.\u00a0 However, Chad Brown does do an excellent job of training his horses for the biggest races.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vino Rosso:10 to 1\u00a0\u00a0odds<br \/>\n<\/strong>Vino Rosso at odds of 10 to 1, is another Todd Pletcher trained contender in the 144<sup>th<\/sup> running of the Kentucky Derby, and no one\u2019s better than Pletcher at preparing his horses for the Derby. Vino Rosso won his entrance to the Derby with an upset victory over Enticed in Saturday\u2019s Wood Memorial.
